Why Change the Health Care System

Why Change the Health Care System

A healthcare system is a major component of a country’s economic plan and is also an indicator of economic growth. Providing adequate health to the majority of the population exerts a positive of influence to the way that businesses are run. It ultimately contributes to better performance for companies. This means that a country that maintains an adequate health care program for its population generally fares better economically than its counterparts.

The US has been considered the highest contributor to health care the world over. Before the current reform, the allocation is estimated to be approximately twice as much for each individual compared to other countries. This high cost of care in the country is affected by several factors which includes the use of advanced medical procedures to prolong life and treat complicated diseases.

Preparing Your Business For The Internet

Preparing Your Business For The Internet

This weeks business advice concerns bringing your brick and mortar business to the internet. While this may seem like a great idea to help build your business you need to take a careful look at the basic procedures of developing an internet presence.

There are many avenues to pursue to be active on the internet from a full blown website to having a social media presence with just Facebook, Twitter or any of the available social media platforms available. Typically websites are supported by activity in the social media circles to help generate traffic to your website where you would provide additional information or generate sales. This is a time consuming activity. You simply cannot throw out sale after sale information to the social media circles and expect to have people flocking to your website. It is about building relationships, trust and friendships. People buy from you, not necessarily because of your product. For the most part they can get what you are selling in hundreds of different locations. Why should they buy from you? This is the big question you will have to answer

Setting up a social media profile is relatively simple. It is as easy as signing up and the populating your profile with the pertinent information you want people to know about. A website is a different process all together. There are many steps to getting this off the ground. I will briefly go through these since you will likely have to hire a professional to accomplish this task for you.

  • You will need a domain name. A name that is memorable that would be relevant to your business. You can go to any of the major domain name registrars to do searches for this. You should buy either a .com, .net or .org as these are tracked by the search engines better than the alternative suffixes.
  • Once you have a domain name you will need hosting. It is very likely that you can get hosting through whatever domain registrar you used to buy your domain name.
  • You will need to begin to carefully consider how people will be searching for the product(s) you have to offer. What are the keywords that they will type into the search engine in order to find what they are looking for? Be careful, this is not as obvious as it seems. The most obvious keywords are the most competitive and very, very difficult and expensive to get ranked in the search engines.
  • After you have determined several keywords to work into your site you will need to develop your site taxonomy, how will the pages all work together. A road map if you will. This can be a very simple process with 10 to 15 pages or may require a more in-depth approach if you require additional pages. Keeping it simple in the beginning is a good Idea. You can add on later.
  • Once the taxonomy is in place you can begin the process of building your website. There are many useful programs available to accomplish this. You can work through a website builder within your domain host, you can use WordPress or a number of other build-it-yourself tools available. It is recommended to hire a professional to accomplish this. It is a bit more difficult that it appears. Plus a pro can work with the nuances of site development to provide you with the branding on the website that you need to be consistent with that of your store, along with many other items of expertise they can provide.

Don’t be afraid to get on the internet. Just use good judgement and have a reason to do so.

Next week’s article will focus on how to get your website noticed on the internet. Stay tuned!

Vertical Gardening Taken To New Heights

Vertical Gardening Taken To New Heights

Vertical gardening has become all the rage over the last 3-4 years, especially for those living in urban areas where gardening space is limited. They supply the homeowner with fresh vegetables and herbs while adding a great shot of color to a typically, grey, bland surrounding.

The idea of having a garden that is positioned vertically has been around for hundreds of years, from the ancient Egyptians and Persians to areas of Europe including Italy and Spain.

Building a vertical garden is not a difficult task but will take some planning on your part to ensure its viability, stability and longevity.

Here are some of the basic steps you will need to take to get your garden “off the ground.”

There are many options for your garden foundation; a blank wall, the side of your home, a shed and so on. Being concerned with urban living these may not be an option for you. A great product for starting your garden is an ordinary pallet. You will first need to seal the backside of the pallet and on end so soil will not escape. Simply measure and cut a piece of wood that will fit to your required pallet specifications.

Once this is completed fill the pallet with a well blended mix of soil and compost. You can mix your own or simply purchase a bag or two from your local garden center.

With the pallet still on it backside, begin to add your plants in the slot. Most often a pallet will have 4-5 slots in which you can add you plants. You will want to use seedling for your plants. You can buy these or simply start in smaller pots on your own. Start by planting at the bottom first working your way to the top. Be sure to pack the soil firmly but not so tight as to choke the plants.Give them an adequate amount of space side-to0-side for growing throughout the summer months.

Once planted, as with a typical garden, water the plants thoroughly. You will want to allow your plants to take root in your new vertical garden, so you should leave the pallet flat for at least 2 weeks to allow this to take place. Once the plants have a firm root system, stand the garden on end and you are set to go.

Another option for a vertical garden is using a lattice-type structure. These can be purchased at your local garden center also. The main difference with this type of structure is you will be planting in a long box and then allowing the plants to grow up the lattice. Vine-type plants like tomatoes are perfect for this application.

Be sure to get a box that is slightly longer than the lattice and at least 12 inches deep to allow for sustainable root growth.

Gardening in an urban setting can be a challenge. With a little bit of creativity and physical effort you can bring the farm to your high-rise patio, apartment deck or wherever you may live in a city. You can enjoy the freshness of home-grown vegetables and the pleasing sight of greenery in your city scape.

City Council Approves New Arena

City Council Approves New Arena

After much anticipation and a great deal of back and forth, the Saskatoon City Council has narrowly passed a measure to fund a 12,000 seat multi-purpose arena. Construction is to begin in the spring of 2014.

Mayer Walter Bentley made the announcement last Wednesday during the annual city council conference.

“This is a great opportunity for us to expand our economic reach while providing 250 jobs for the next 2 years. Once the arena has been completed, another 110 will be permanent.” said Mayer Bentley.

During the feasibility study done in 2012, the arena committee looked at several arena complexes in other cities in Canada and in the United States.

“One arena stood out as being very similar to that of what the arena committee was looking for meeting much of the criteria of our plan,” stated Bentley. That is the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA.

Than Van Andel Arena was built in 1996 in Grand Rapids which has a similar city population as well as a suburban population of nearly a half of a million residents. This is very close to what the population of the our area.

The greatest concern of the city managers was being able to consistently fill the arena and provide quality entertainment. The Van Andel Arena has the luxury of being the home of the Grand Rapids Griffins hockey club which is affiliated with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League.

“We have begun a partnership with the Van Andel Arena management group to help guide us through the process of securing a franchise for the new arena,” said Saskatoon City Manager, Bill Ingrham.

Since the announcement of the new arena was made, many people have been contacting our offices asking about the name. With a majority of the funding coming from tax revenue from the City of Saskatoon a name was agreed upon that would one, promote the city of Saskatoon, and two, give it a global brand. The name unanimously voted upon out of several finalist is Global Arena of Saskatoon.

“We feel we have nailed the name perfectly providing global awareness and local flavor,” said Mayor Bentley.

It was reported recently that the construction will be managed by a local Saskatoon firm, AR Construction Corp. We looked into the history of AR Construction Corp. and found that they have an international reputation for developing high quality constructed facilities around the world. Their acclaim to fame, if you will, is the Carter Resort Complex in Montreal, a 100,000 square foot construction developed on 34 acres of St. Lawrence River property.

“Our excitement about this project is hard to contain, said Ingrham. “We have been looking for an opportunity to expand the City of Saskatoon into a more widely utilized area.”

The Saskneer will be adding a featured section to this website for the duration of the construction of the Global Arena. With the increase in tourism, a potential professional franchise, increase revenue for the city and a great entertainment complex for the citizens of Saskatoon and the surrounding area, this is a winning situation.

Car Insurance Companies Team Up For Disaster Relief

Car Insurance Companies Team Up For Disaster Relief

The competition among car insurance companies is well documented. There has been story after story of car insurance companies taking customers for each other with flimsy promises and short lived discounts.

Recently an initiative was introduced at the Canadian Conference of Car Insurers in October 2013 (CCCI)  that revolved around them putting aside their rivalries for a great cause. With the increase of natural disaster both at home and abroad, a proposal was introduced by Philip Remeax. Philip is the CEO and Managing Partner of Northern Insurance Company based is Saskatoon, Canada. Philip went on record as stating that he had seen far too many people suffering in the world form natural disasters and he personally is committed to do something about it.

During Philip’s keynote address at CCCI he laid out a strategic plan to help fund four major disaster relief organizations both in Canada and internationally. The four being The Canadian Red Cross, Catholic Relief Services, Wold Missions and CARE. His initiative is based on a percentage of gross revenue collected by all car insurers in Canada. The reason for this stems from the fact the Philip believes that vehicle emissions are a leading contributor to climate change and therefor are impacting the forces of nature, thus an increase of natural disasters. Initially, this was a tough sell, but after presenting much scientific evidence to the validity of his claim, many of the agencies that provide car insurance have come aboard to help fund this initiative. Out of the 392 insurance companies that cover vehicles, 277 have agreed to participate. This will be managed through a non-payed four level management team. The organization will be know as CIDRA or Car Insurers Disaster Relief Association.

The car insurance industry in Canada is a 79 billion dollar industry annually. Philip believes with the number of companies committed to helping by providing just .5% of their annual car insurance sales this can raise early 3 billion dollars over the course of two years. Split equally among the four agencies this will be a huge shot in the arm to their ability to provide immediate response and equipment to areas struck by natural disasters.

Given the recent typhoon in the Philippines, the late fall tornado outbreak in the Midwest states of the United States, even the devastating Japan earthquake of 2010, this kind of financial support cannot come soon enough.

The key to this type of funding is the distribution of funds. Philip outlined this at the CCCI. Each month the participating insurance agencies will deposit their portion of their revenue in an escrow account set up by the North American Bank of Canada. We will not monitor this transaction to make sure that those who agreed to participate actually are participating. It is on the honor system. Philip has stated that if the insurance companies have pledged to help then they will follow through with their pledge. On the first of every month starting in January of 2014 funds will be transferred by direct deposit to the four relief organizations. At the end of every quarter the four relief organizations will provide a detailed report outlining the verifiable expenditures for their relief efforts as concerned with the funding from CIDRA.

More and more professional business are looking to find ways to help in disaster relief efforts. This is but one mans’ passion about climate change that will greatly impact the ability of disaster relief organizations to respond more effectively in the time of need.

Adverse Side of Popular Medicines

Adverse Side of Popular Medicines

We have all seen the commercials that bombard our airwaves for medications with names that we barely can pronounce.

The actors are typically in a lifestyle situation with family and friends, fishing, at a dinner party, cycling, exercising and various other situations. They begin to describe their medical issues and then proceed to tell us how their doctor prescribed this certain medicine to take care of their medical issue.

What is alarming to me is after they describe in detail the benefits of the specific medication, the conversation turns to that of what adverse side effects these medications can have on the person taking them. It appears that some of the adverse effects are far worse then if the person did not take the medication at all.

For instance the drug Crestor, used to lower cholesterol, has these side effects:

  • unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness;
  • fever, unusual tiredness, and dark colored urine;
  • swelling, weight gain, urinating less than usual or not at all; or
  • nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Less serious side effects may include:

  • headache, depressed mood;
  • mild muscle pain;
  • joint pain;
  • sleep problems (insomnia), nightmares;
  • constipation;
  • mild nausea; or
  • stomach pain or indigestion.

The point of this article is to help you to begin to develop an understanding of the seriousness of taking medications for every aliment you may have. Granted, some ailments can only be treated with chemical medications. For the most part, our medical problems begin with what we put in our bodies. A majority of the population is overweight and/or obese. This does not come from eating right. With this weight gain comes some serious medical issues like diabetes.

A reduction on processed sugars and processed foods will begin to turn the tide of a majority of our medical issues. I once listened to a talk by a nutrition expert who’s father was consistently sick and taking a hand full of pills everyday. He could barely walk on his own and his moods were less than desirable. Over a period of time she was able to convince her father to eliminate all processed sugars and foods from his diet. Within six months of doing this he had eliminates 80% of his medications, he was moving better than he had in ten years and his mood was a complete 180 degrees from what it was prior.

As a population we are all  looking for the instant fix and the fast change. We are over medicating ourselves to a degree that is not healthy. The drug companies are raking in billions of dollars in an effort to “fix” our health problems. The side effects of the medications the drug companies put on the market can be worse that the actual medical issue. the point is that we need to take control of our lives and begin to take care of ourselves. When we begin to eat better foods, whole food, green foods, unprocessed food and exercise more we will start to see a nation of healthy people not having to rely on a synthetic drug to get through the day.

So carefully consider what you are putting in your body when you eat and especially when you are taking medication.

The Bahamas Are More Affordable Than You May Think.

The Bahamas Are More Affordable Than You May Think.

It is a fact, Canada is cold in the winter. No doubt about it. We choose to live here because of the rich heritage of our ancestors and the amazing beauty of the Canadian wilderness. When winter hits, I know of no person that would not enjoy a couple weeks away in a tropical climate. Well, what may be just a fantasy can soon be a reality because the Bahamas are more affordable than you may think.

Traveling to a tropical climate can be a great break from the long, cold winter months. A popular winter destination is the Bahamas. Those quaint islands off the shore of Florida have been a popular destination for warm weather seekers for decades.

Many worry about the cost to travel out of country to the Bahamas. Most believe that it is simply too far out of their budget and only available to the rich and famous. Today I am here to tell you that you too can afford a vacation in the Bahamas.

Typically the flights from Saskatoon to Nassau are very reasonable. As of the writing of this article for a two week February trip, flying mid week, avoiding the busy weekend travel, we have found flights for $425 round trip per person. You can pick you travel window and choose any of the online travel sites to find your best deal to fit your circumstances.

A great way to enjoy a vacation of this nature is to look closely at the all-inclusive resorts. More and more vacationers are choosing this option when vacationing in a tropical paradise. The amenities and services that these resorts offer make them an attractive option for soaking up the sun and relaxing.

Take for instance, many all-inclusive resorts will provide travel vouchers for reduced air fair. Some will provide discounts on the services that they offer like pampering yourself at a spa, golf discounts scuba classes and many other opportunities to experience the Bahamas and save. Routinely these all-inclusive provide ample opportunity to experience the surrounding culture with day trips for a very reasonable cost. Tour buses leave each day for trips into the big cities where you can experience the culture through locally grown food and entertainment.

Many vacationers take advantage of everything the resort offers thus saving on extra travel expenses to go other places. There is plenty to keep both adult and child entertained throughout the vacation if you stay exclusively at the resort. Luxurious accommodations, fine dining, outdoor activities all make your stay memorable and fun.

Take advantage of the large group discounts, too. Some resorts will provide a free room when so many rooms are booked. This discount can be distributed throughout your group saving everyone a bit of money, too!

Perhaps the Bahamas is not your destination of choice. Many of the ll-inclusives have resorts in other areas like Barbados, Grenada and other topical destinations. Contacting the resort customer service or going online is your best bet to find the location you are looking for.

Vacationing in the Bahamas is an incredible opportunity to bring family and friends together. You do not have to worry that it may break the bank. Just do your research, plan what you want to do while vacationing, stick to your budget and you will not return with buyer’s remorse, but with great memories for years to come!

Put A Smile On You Face With The Right Dental Procedure

Put A Smile On You Face With The Right Dental Procedure

It is no secret that the costs of dental care, be that cosmetic or medically required, is getting beyond a joke. It is worrying to think that in today’s day and age, people cannot receive the dental care that they require through the excessive costs.

In today’s article, we look at the exorbitant costs of dental implants.

What are dental implants?

If you have one or more missing teeth, there are a number of ways to replace them. According to leading dental website an alternative to bridges, partial or full dentures may be dental implants. The missing roots are replaced by the implants and this support artificial replacement of the teeth. They are comfortable and look like natural teeth.

It costs about $3,500 to have dental implants from a specialize doctor in the US.

More Information About Dental Implants

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made from titanium metal. It is inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of a natural tooth. The artificial tooth prosthesis is attached to the implant. The implant acts as an anchor to hold the replacement tooth in place.

Quick Tips: How are Dental Implants Done?

  • Your dentist or specialist will examine your mouth thoroughly and take x-rays of the head, jaw and teeth to determine if dental implants are right for you.
  • Secondly a full-mouth cast will be made in order to give the oral surgeon a visual of mouth ans teeth shape.
  • During the first stage of the surgery, the oral surgeon works to implant the titanium root into your jaw under the gum. The implant is then sutured in place. As the tissue heals, the implant will bond with the bone. It may take several months to heal.
  • During the second stage of the surgery and after the tissue has healed the oral surgeon will attach the abutment. The abutment is necessary to connect the replacement tooth  to the titanium root. In some cases, the first and second steps of the implant surgery may be performed in a single office visit
  • When replacing several teeth, a fixed bridge is anchored to exiting teeth. This bridge is made from making a form of the two teeth opposite the missing tooth then casting a titanium model. The two teeth opposite of the missing tooth are then reduced to allow the model to cap over these two teeth. These are securely anchored with a dental cement.
  • If the procedure was done correctly you will see very little difference in the bridge versus your actual teeth.

You will need to be prepared to sit in the dental chair for an extended period of time. As stated previously this may take at least two sessions sometimes three.

I know of an individual that went for years with an incisor tooth that was darkened from a dead root. At one point, due to infection there was a root canal performed. Eventually the tooth needed to be replaced. This was accomplished by building the bridge as described above. The procedure was successful and the patient has lived with the same bridge for 25 years.

There are good dentists then there are great dentists. Do your homework when considering any form of dental work.

Coming Up with a Sound Financial Plan

Coming Up with a Sound Financial Plan

One of the ways to gain financial security is to draw up a financial plan. Most children are taught the value of saving money through the piggy bank method. The idea is to keep your money someplace where you cannot easily get it. In time, when the piggy bank is filled, the money you keep will be big enough to buy something or the entire amount can be your initial deposit for a bank savings account.

The value of savings is based on the principle of storing enough financial resources for your future. This is because a person’s ability to earn tapers as he ages and having substantial savings gives him choices about the kind of life he’ll keep. A financial plan helps an individual map out his options on what to do with his money during his earning years. This ensures a better future for him and his family because it prepares resources that he can use when he eventually retires.

A married couple needs to sit down with an expert to create a plan that they can mutually work on. They will be given sound advice on how best to handle their money and make it grow. A financial planner helps out by balancing the wish list of each party in terms of what to spend on. The spending list of a couple is usually different from each other and is often the source of misunderstanding. Drawing up a plan gives them the option to work together for what they both want while setting up a financial reserve for their retirement.

This is critical because the future happens faster than we think. And if you don’t plan for it, it can cause worry and frustration. Remember that your options to earn will not be the same as you age and you have to take advantage of your productive years. The bottom line is to find ways to use your money wisely and make it grow so that you have enough savings to use later on for things like medical care, travel and grandchildren.

A financial plan is actually a list of what you want to achieve in life, it includes the things that you want to buy and activities that you plan to do. You then have to put the monetary value of each of these things to have a clear idea of the amount of money that you need to put up. Then you can consider the options you can take to invest your money and make it grow. There are a lot of investment choices that are open to you and consultants that you can work with to understand the differences of each.

The advantage of having a financial plan is that it helps you develop a proper mindset on managing your finances so you can realize your goals. It gives you an assurance that you and your family can comfortably live better in the future when you have to retire for work. A big component of planning is to prepare for this specific period in your life. This will allow you to pay off your obligations,such as taxes, and still have enough resources to continue on with a good life. The key is to try to balance your current financial activities with a thought to your future. This will help you think twice about the things that you want to buy and instead focus on saving more.

Starting a Recession Proof Business

Starting a Recession Proof Business

Everyone gets hit when the economy slides down but the impact on people involve different levels. Consumers feel it when they have to shell out more for basic goods or worse, when the provider in the family gets laid off. Business owners see its effect reflected on their annual sales reports. Small business owners who do not have enough cash reserves to back up the cost of their daily operations may end up closing altogether. In any case, it does not present a good picture for anyone.

But this harsh reality should not discourage you from pursuing an independent venture if you have the resources and the passion to back it up. There are some things though that will help you keep your head up even in a challenging economy. Preparation is one of these. It is part of the foundation in setting up a business. And a key part of preparation is doing your homework, a big part of which is research.

The most critical step to take is to know the game. Look into the different kinds of small businesses and what it would take to get one off the ground. Study probable competitors and observe their techniques. This would help you get ideas on what processes are effective in reaching your market. Because the truth is, even in difficult times, people will spend money. While majority of the money that they  have would be set aside to meet their needs,  a small portion will be left over to spend on things that they want. Your objective is to identify what products or services would meet their varied needs. Plan well and you will see the fruits of your labor because if you have done your homework properly, your business venture will increase in strength even in a challenging environment.

The funny thing about small businesses is that there are enterprises that can thrive even if people are working on a very tight budget. Some of the companies who have withstood a shaky economy:

Vehicle repair shop. You can establish a loyal clientele base with this kind of shop if you get your service right. People who are fond of cars are willing to spend a lot just to ensure that their vehicle gets the right kinds of service and care. And since majority of consumers would take their time before buying a new unit, the common concern for owners is maintenance or repair.

• Yard cleaning service. This is a business that is both recession and weather proof. It’s a service that people will always need so you don’t really need to advertise a lot to get the work orders in. Busy households where both parents are working and the growing percentage of the aging population are captured market for this kind of venture.

• Rental of equipment and tools. Since people are in the saving mode, those who need house repair may think twice out about contracting the job to experts and do minor repairs by themselves. It makes perfect sense therefore to just rent out the equipment because these are not the kind that you would use regularly such as power washers, compressors and chain saws.

• Ventilation service. While people would find ways to scrimp and save on different things, even go as far as stop buying stuff altogether, there are necessities that you have to make room far, no matter how limited your budget is. Heat and ventilation falls in this category- services that are related to installing furnaces, heaters, gas fireplaces and air conditioners will continue to prosper because people can’t live without them.
